Incursions and Excursions

  • Incursions are instances during which powerful entities enter the area and apply their own rules to the world, triggering an encounter where they will attempt to influence events on site.
  • Excursions are opportunities to travel to another location where powerful entities are present and their own rules will apply, in order to achieve some objective (usually defined by the Foundation).
  • During Incursions and Excursions, Ribboned items can be used by anyone.
  • Incursions will be sprung at short notice but never during mealtimes and never inside Base Camp. The start and end of an Incursion will be signalled with the ringing of a loud bell.
  • Excursions will be advertised at least an hour in advance.
  • The special rules for Incursions and Excursions will always be made available before any combat can occur.
  • It is the responsibility of Player Characters to ensure that Incursion Stats are proliferated through the camp: if you don't know what they are then they don't apply.
  • Security Incidents are times when real world enemies of the Foundation will attempt to enter the site and achieve an objective but no special rules apply.

The presence of Foundation Staff and multiple Anomalies will often attract the attention of further Anomalies to an area. More often than perhaps the Foundation would like, this can result in entities – or perhaps entities influenced by those Anomalies – attempting to enter the area. This can take the form of just general purpose “attacks”, but also more subversive incidents such as “hauntings” or “raids” on certain key locations.

During these Incursions, the normal “real world” rules of combat are changed by the Anomaly causing the Incursion. These changes will be detected in advance of the Incursion – usually providing an advance warning of it happening – and distributed to Staff. It is the responsibility of Staff to ensure everyone who needs to know is aware of what the Incursion changes are. Incursions usually end after the influencing entities have been either neutralised or repelled, though occasionally specific objectives might need to be achieved to end it.

Some Incursions will be combat-oriented; others will not be and Characters will need to find non-violent means to repel or handle the entities infringing upon their site.

Incursions will never be able to enter Base Camp and will never be briefed to attempt to do so.

The start and end of Incursions are signalled by a loud bell.

While Anomalous Incidents will generally be confined to the specific site they're at in the Out-Of-Character Real World, the influence of certain powerful entities can result in opportunities to travel to different locations in the real world or occasionally into different dimensions. These opportunities will always be advertised at least an hour before they happen, list a maximum number of attendees, and detail the specific changes to the combat rules of the real world that will be in effect.

Excursions will leave via a predefined location and then head out for around 15-20 minutes during which time Investigators are expected to attempt to achieve some objective or objectives while also repelling the harmful effects of entities in the area. For example, heading to a location to receive an artefact while entities attempt to protect it, or attempting to escort someone to a location without being killed by entities.

Usually Excursions will involve a mixture of combat and non-combat roles, but around half will be strictly non-combat in nature. That doesn't mean, of course, that something horrible can't happen to you…

Sometimes the things to worry about aren't extradimensional beings but rather the greatest danger: other people. Sometimes security incidents will occur where Characters who aren't meant to be in the area will arrive and need to be redirected or “taken care of” in the case of enemies of the Foundation.

OC Note: The site for Anomalous events will always be either for the exclusive use of the game or within an area of exclusive use so you can assume anyone wandering in is a member of Crew to be accosted as you like. If in doubt, you can ask a Ref if you think someone outside of the game has wandered onto site by accident.
