Departments
A non-exhaustive list of Cross Foundation departments can be found below. Authorisations are not necessarily tied to any one Department – and, owing to the fact that the Foundation is unable to regularly bring in consultants due to the secrecy of its work, there is often a lot of overlap between Departments. You must name a Department as part of your job description at Character Creation, but you are welcome to invent a Department not included in this list, if you wish.
Experimental
Investigation. Observation. Categorisation.
Established by Dr Godfrey Cross in the earliest days of the Cross Foundation, the Experimental Department stands at the very heart of the Foundation with the aim to research Anomalies. Staff within the Experimental Department might be responsible for…
- Submitting new Anomaly reports to the Archive.
- Designing experiments to advance the Foundation's understanding of an Anomaly.
- Documenting their observations on the way an Anomaly interacts with the world.
Containment
Diligence. Vigilance. Preservation.
Established shortly after the formation of the Experimental Department, the Containment Department exists to protect Anomalies stored by the Cross Foundation and restrict any harmful or undesirable effects to the greatest possible extent. Staff within the Containment Department might be responsible for…
- Coordinating efforts to identify areas affected by an Anomaly.
- Using the standard Cross Foundation Containment Procedure to secure an Anomaly in the field.
- Working with the Security Department to mitigate the risks posed by an Anomaly.
Postroom
Communication. Connection. Information.
Despite significant advancements since the invention of the telegraph and then telephone, the Postroom has retained its original title from the early 1820s. The Postroom functions as a hub for communications both within and outside of the Foundation. Staff within the Postroom might be responsible for…
- Receiving and assessing leads from a network of contacts around the world.
- Distributing company memos between other departments.
- Gathering information about developing incidents, both first-hand and from eyewitnesses.
Security
Protection. Surveillance. Defence.
The Security Department exists to protect the Cross Foundation and the people within it from threats both inside and out. Staff within the Security Department might be responsible for…
- Taking into custody any intruders on Cross Foundation property, including at Incident Sites.
- Identifying suspicious behaviour which may be linked to anomalous incidents.
- Using appropriate force to defend other Foundation staff and resources from Incursions.
Logistics
Preparation. Coordination. Provisions.
Alongside the Relations Department (which has since divided into Public Relations and Extradimensional Diplomacy), the Logistics Department was introduced by Dr Clarence Cross in the late 19th century as an effort to streamline the work of the Cross Foundation. Staff within the Logistics Department might be responsible for…
- Supervising the use of Cross Foundation resources in the field.
- Maintaining Cross Foundation equipment.
- Coordinating Excursions.
R&D
Innovation. Acquisition. Maintenance.
The Research and Development Department is responsible for engineering new equipment and innovating new ways to use Anomalies for the benefit of the Cross Foundation. Staff within the R&D Department might be responsible for…
- Prototyping and testing new equipment for field use.
- Working with the Experimental Department to uncover helpful and (mostly) safe uses for contained Anomalies.
- Identifying opportunities for innovation.
Public Relations
Privacy. Safeguarding. Discretion.
One of two departments that developed from the original Relations Department, Public Relations aims to protect the Cross Foundation's secrets and maintain a low profile to the general public. Staff within the R&D Department might be responsible for…
- Managing the Cross Foundation's (extremely minimal) public face as a private research institution.
- Preparing appropriate cover stories for anomalous incidents.
- Coordinating security for top-secret sites.
Extradimensional Diplomacy
Mediation. Bargaining. Brokerage.
Having separated from Public Relations as its own distinct department, Extradimensional Diplomacy is responsible to maintaining productive (or at least non-destructive) relationships with Anomalies considered to be sapient. Staff within the Extradimensional Diplomacy Department might be responsible for…
- Advising on the appropriate handling of X- and XX-class Anomalies.
- Coordinating Conferences with XX-class Anomalies.
- Handling requests and complains from sapient Anomalies.
Human Resources
Recruitment. Discipline. Motivation.
The most recent of the departments established within the Cross Foundation, the role of Human Resources is, in many ways, similar to the Human Resources department of any institution. Its primary function is maintaining the the sustainability of the Foundation as it relates to its human employees. Staff within the Human Resources Department might be responsible for…
- Overseeing regular training sessions and performance reviews.
- Presenting appealing employment prospects for individuals who witnessed an anomalous incident.
- Handling termination procedures for employees leaving the Foundation.
