Character Creation

+++ EMPLOYEE INFORMATION +++
It is the responsibility of all Staff employed by The Foundation to:
→ Provide required personal details (Y-422 notwithstanding) at the point of employment.
→ Provide, without delay, any additional personal details that become required during the course of employment.
→ Notify Human Resources should their personal details change, so that they may be kept up to date.

All Staff will be issued with an Identification Card (“ID Badge”) which will display their name, job title, and active authorisations.

It is the duty of all Staff to identify and isolate any individual without an ID Badge or with manifest ID Badge inconsistencies.

Remember: if you don't recognise your Colleague and they insist that you should, something is almost certainly wrong.

The rules on this page describe how to create a Character for Anomalous. Follow them step-by-step then use the form in the final step to submit a Character.

Step 1: Who are you?

Consider what sort of character you want to play and what their role is. Characters in Anomalous are all employees of The Cross Foundation – an organisation devoted to investigating strange anomalies in the world, studying, and containing them – who are dispatched as the first responders to Incidents. They represent all of the departments of the Foundation including investigators, security, and researchers alike, and are tasked with understanding and containing whatever is going on wherever they have been dispatched.

Think about both what sort of Character you want to play at work, but also what your motivations are for being at this job. Investigating and containing Anomalies is tiring and dangerous work, so what is it that's keeping you here?

Step 2: Authorisation

Characters in Anomalous specialise by having Authorisation for certain actions or resources. These include being able to access and use the Archive, access to specific equipment, and indeed authorisation to contact certain Anomalies. Every Character has one intrinsic Authorisation that allows them to get on with their job, and other Authorisations may be granted (or revoked) in play.

Authorisations are displayed on your ID Badge at all times.

Step 3: Quirks

Quirks are an opportunity to provide mechanically informed flavour to your Character: after all, it's hard to work for the Cross Foundation without having some sort of metaphysical baggage. These Quirks are selected from the Quirks list and Characters may have up to 2 of them.

Some Quirks are unambiguously positive, some Quirks are unambiguously negative, and some are just ambiguous, but all Quirks are designed to be fun. You of course do not have to take any and can give your Character all the flavour you want in your Character Bio, but Quirks sign you up to a particular area of interest.

Step 4: Job Description

Characters also have a Job Description which indicates what they are supposed to be doing at their job. These inform what other Characters and NPCs expect you to be doing, informs the appointment of your Character's Line Manager, and also is displayed proudly on your ID badge. In Character, you will have been appointed to this job directly, but when creating a Character this is entirely for you to define.

Job Descriptions must take the form of [Department] [Area of Responsibility] [Role Title] and have no need to be consistent with other titles or your Authorisation. For example:

See Departments for a list of major Departments or feel free to create your own, and Staff for existing some Staff Job Descriptions.

Job Descriptions are subject to vetting and tweaking by the Refs to gel best with the setting.

Step 5: The Details

(Some) Characters do have lives outside of the Foundation, so tell us about them! Describe them in a 20 word public Staff Bio (which will be displayed on the Wiki on the Staff page) and an optional private background (max 300 words) that will be reviewed by the Refs for stylistic and metaphysical conformity (no unapproved time travellers, no secret Excaliburs).

Step 6: Submit!

Using this form, submit all this information and await approval!

Remember, your place is not confirmed until you have booked and paid the £20 deposit (see our website for payment details)!
